Possible Interaction: Tamoxifen and Black Cohosh Extract

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

However, black cohosh inhibited MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation at 10(3) microg/mL (p < 0.05), and this inhibitory effect was enhanced by increasing tamoxifen concentrations.
Interestingly, the combination of black cohosh (10(0)-10(3) microg/mL) with increasing tamoxifen concentrations further inhibited MCF-7 cell growth.
This study reveals a cytotoxic effect of black cohosh on both estrogen-sensitive and estrogen-insensitive breast cancer cells and a synergism with tamoxifen for inhibition of cancerous cell growth.

Results from the most recently published trial, however, indicate that black cohosh is not effective for the treatment of menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors being treated with tamoxifen.

At 50 μg/mL, a 75% ethanolic extract of black cohosh inhibited formation of 4-hydroxy- TAM by 66.3%, N-desmethyl TAM by 74.6% and α-hydroxy TAM by 80.3%.
The results of this study suggests that co-administration of black cohosh with TAM might interfere with the clinical efficacy of this drug.
