Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

Herein we demonstrate that retinoids are capable of enhancing StAR protein, P-StAR, and steroid production in granulosa, adrenocortical, glial, and epidermal cells.
These findings provide novel insights into the relevance of retinoid signaling in the up-regulation of steroid biosynthesis in various target tissues, and indicate that retinoid therapy may have important implications in age-related complications and diseases.

Discoveries from studies of mouse skin have proved to be landmarks in cancer research … tumors; the powerful tumor-promoting action of phorbol esters; the antipromoting potency of retinoids … steroids ; the modifying role of age, caloric intake, and specific dietary …; and the requirement for multiple genetic changes in malignant conversion.

Furthermore, addition of steroid may reduce RA doses to be used that might be effective in preventing RA toxicity.
The results of these studies suggest that combined short-course high-dose steroid and RA could be more effective in the treatment of APL.

Treatment of HL60 cells with retinoids or 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 increased steroid sulphatase mRNA and activity in parallel with the induction of CD11b, an early marker of myeloid differentiation that is expressed before the differentiating cells stop proliferating.

Our results show that steroid hormones (testosterone and dexamethasone) and retinoids have strong, but opposite effects on tube formation in a human in vitro model reflecting pathological angiogenesis in the presence of fibrin and inflammatory mediators.

The effect of RA on apoD expression by T-47D cells was at least 12-fold more potent than the effect of the steroids dihydrotestosterone and dexamethasone, which had been previously described as hormonal up-regulators of apoD expression in these cells.

Since topical steroids diminish the irritation induced by retinoic acid (RA), whereas retinoic acid may counteract the atrophogenic effects of steroids, the possible interplay of both compounds in the expression of CRABP I and II appeared worth studying.
We found that CRABP II protein and mRNA were strongly increased upon retinoic acid application: this induction was significantly inhibited by concomitant application of triam‐cinolone acetonide; a more potent steroid , dilluocortolone valerate, was also found to dimish normal endogenous expression of CRABP II.
