Possible Interaction: S-Adenosylmethionine and Serotonin

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

S-Adenosylmethionine , which has antidepressant properties, raises brain 5-hydroxytryptamine.

Binding of serotonin to the catalytic site inhibits the access of SAM , thus preventing methylation of COMT substrates.
Using computational modeling, biochemical tests and cellular assays we show that serotonin actively competes with the methyl donor S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) within the catalytic site.

One hour after SAM injection 5-HT biosynthesis was increased in the corpus striatum (55%), the hippocampus (3-fold) (82% 2 hr after SAM injection) and decreased in the olfactory bulbs (34%).
These area-related changes in 5-HT biosynthesis and metabolism might suggest a possible neurochemical substrate for the antidepressant properties of SAM.

The administration of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) to rats caused an increase in 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA) in some regions of the rat brain.
The 5-HT turnover rate, determined by the steady state kinetic method, was higher in rats receiving repeated administrations of SAMe.
