Possible Interaction: Propranolol and Vitamin C

supplement:

Vitamin C

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

Compared to controls, vitamin C decreased the maximum concentration of propranolol from 463 to 334 nmol·l−1, and the area under the propranolol concentration-time curve (from 0 to 24 hours) from 3,13 to 1,96 μmol·l−1·h.
The heart-rate decreased less when propranolol was administered with ascorbic acid in comparison to control subjects, although this interaction has little biological importance.

It is reasonable to assume that the extremely small amounts of N-… should not represent a significant carcinogenic risk, but co-formulation of propranolol … ascorbic acid , which has been found to minimize the nitrosation reaction, might be useful … if minimal, contribution to the already existing exposure to genotoxic chemicals.

The effect of l‐ascorbic acid is blocked by the nonselective serotonin antagonists methiothepin, clozapine, methysergide, and pizotifen, but not mesulergine, spiperone, MDL 72222, and dl‐propranolol , nor by the catecholaminergic receptor antagonists prazosin and S(−)‐sulpiride.
