Possible Interaction: Potassium and Nicorandil

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

These data are consistent with attenuation of the anti-ischemic effects of this drug and suggest that the potassium channel-opening properties do not compensate for development of attenuation to the nitrate component of nicorandil.

Activation of potassium channels by nicorandil causes expulsion of potassium ions into the extracellular space leading to membrane hyperpolarization, closure of voltage-gated calcium channels and finally vasodilatation.

In both preparations, nicorandil had only a slight inhibitory effect on the responses to potassium and Ca2+.
Pharmacology  •  1987  |  View Paper
It is likely that nicorandil inhibited depolarization through an increase in potassium conductance.

From these results it appears that nicorandil may increase the potassium conductances but not hyperpolarize the membrane potential because the background potassium conductance is little developed in the nodal cells.
