Phenethylamines

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

Amphetamine‐like stimulants were divided into two groups, one in which the stereotyped behaviour was not antagonized by reserpine [(+)‐amphetamine, (‐)‐amphetamine, methamphetamine, phenmetrazine and phenethylamine ] and another group in which the behavioural effects were blocked by reserpine (methylphenidate, nomifensine, pipradrol and amfonelic acid (NCA; Win 25978)).

The brain content of phenylethylamine in mice (Mosnaim and Sabelli, 1971), rabbits (Sabelli, Giardina, Mosnaim and Inwang, 1972) and rats (Fischer, Spatz, Heller and Reggiani, 1972) is increased by antidepressive treatments (imipramine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, electroshock) and reduced by reserpine.

It was found that some compounds, e.g. amphetamine derivatives, phenmetrazine, phenethylamine derivatives and tryptamine derivatives were considerably more potent in the reserpinized preparation than in the normal one.

2 Retardation of metabolism, by pretreatment with the monoamineoxidase inhibitors iproniazid or phenelzine, causes β‐phenylethylamine (which in untreated rats has no effect) to induce hypertensive responses to reserpine.

Phenylethylamine inhibited the accumulation of administered α-methyl-noradrenaline in noradrenaline and dopamine nerve terminals of animals pretreated with reserpine.

One additional property of the 6-substituted dopamines, shared with reserpine , was an ability markedly to augment pressor responses of phenethylamine in the dog within minutes after their administration.

IT has been shown1,2 that the effects of sympathomimetic amines, called indirect (tyramine, phenylethylamine , phenylethanolamine, ephedrine, amphetamine), are abolished by pretreatment with reserpine.
