Possible Interaction: Naltrexone and Oxytocin

supplement:

Oxytocin

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

In a recent case report involving a male with hypothalamic obesity, concurrent administration of oxytocin (OT) and an opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone (NTX), synergistically affected energy balance.
We conclude that OT and NTX act synergistically to decrease food consumption in rats and that this transient effect is accompanied by changes in brain processes relevant to feeding.

Although ineffective when given alone, opioids potentiate the release of oxytocin in the limbic brain and increase the intensity of maternal responding, while the opioid receptor blocker, naltrexone , prevents both maternal induction and oxytocin release.

The antinociceptive effect of oxytocin was also prevented by naltrexone , and oxytocin caused a small but significant increase of the antinociceptive effect of morphine and of its duration.

Electrical stimulation produced marked increases in release of both neural lobe peptides in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner, and the electrically evoked release of OT , but not VP, was enhanced by the opiate antagonist naltrexone (10 microM).

Naltrexone also prevented the CSF increase in oxytocin following vaginocervical stimulation but was without effect on plasma levels.
