Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

AIMS The appearance of peripheral neuropathy is the dose-limiting toxicity in many chemotherapy protocols, and glutamine has been proposed as a potentially neuroprotective agent in patients receiving paclitaxel.
The per cent change in the compound motor action potential (CMAP) and sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes after paclitaxel treatment was lower in the glutamine group, but this finding was not statistically significant in these small groups.

CONCLUSIONS Gl tamine ma y reduce the severity of peripheral neuropathy associated with high-dose pac litaxel; h owever, results from randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials will be needed to fully assess its impact, if any.

By investigating the glutamine metabolism of breast cancer cells in response to treatment with Taxol in vitro, it was observed that Taxol induced the uptake of glutamine and the expression of GLS1.

The incidence and severity of peripheral sensory neuropathy associated with taxane-agents such as paclitaxel can be reduced with vitamin E, glutamine , and acetyl-L-carnitine.

Two studies revealed that oral glutamine was effective in reducing peripheral neuropathy associated with high-dose paclitaxel , as evidenced by a reduction in numbness, dysesthesias, and motor weakness, as well as a smaller loss of vibratory sensation.

Deprivation of glutamine increased the sensitivity of cells to paclitaxel , and compound 968 sensitized cells to the anti-proliferative effects of paclitaxel.

Glutamine may prevent neurotoxicity of paclitaxel , cisplatin, oxaplatin bortezomib and lenolidamide, and is beneficial in the reduction of the dose-limiting gastrointestinal toxic effects of irinotecan and 5-FU-induced mucositis and stomatitis.

Among patients experiencing paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy, l-glutamine (10 g orally three time daily for four days starting 24 hours after completion of therapy with paclitaxel ) produced significant reductions in the severity of dysesthesias and numbness (P < 0.05).
