Possible Interaction: Ethanol and Ibuprofen

supplement:

Ethanol

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

Ibuprofen caused a 10% decrease in the maximum rate of elimination of ethanol.
The auditory‐verbal memory of the subjects, which is primarily a function of the left cerebral hemisphere, was assessed by the Selective Reminding Test and showed decreased impairment during combined ibuprofen and ethanol dosing as compared with ethanol dosing alone (P = 0.04).
Visual memory, which is a function primarily mediated by the right cerebral hemisphere, was measured by the Benton Visual Retention test and was more impaired during combined ibuprofen and ethanol dosing than during ethanol dosing alone (P = 0.05).

As the amount of ethanol was raised from 0 to 100%, ibuprofen solubility was enhanced 5,500-fold relative to its aqueous solubility.
In silicone membranes, the flux of ibuprofen increased 8-fold over the range of ethanol concentrations studied (0–100%) relative to aqueous solutions, with the highest flux observed for 100% ethanol.

Collectively, this study has demonstrated that ibuprofen and EtOH can induce synergistic hepatotoxicity, providing a line of evidence for caution against the use of ibuprofen in combination with alcohol.
