Possible Interaction: Ethanol and Haloperidol

supplement:

Ethanol

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

Haloperidol also dampened some of the subjective effects of ethanol , especially in subjects who experienced stimulation after ethanol.
Haloperidol reduced stimulant-like and euphorigenic effects of ethanol in subjects who experienced stimulant effects (n = 8) but had no effect in subjects who did not experience stimulation from ethanol (n = 9).
It was hypothesized that a low dose of the DA D2/D3 antagonist haloperidol (3 mg) would attenuate stimulant-like subjective effects of ethanol (0.75 g/kg) and reduce the number of drinks chosen during a subsequent choice phase.

Subjects also consumed about 25% less optionally available alcohol when pretreated with haloperidol than when pretreated with saline.

C57BL mice, after chronic ethanol treatment and withdrawal, demonstrate significantly decreased responses, in terms of DOPA accumulation and DA release, to both haloperidol , a DA antagonist, and apomorphine, a DA agonist.

The effect of ethanol on the startle response was potentiated by pretreatment of the animals with pimozide, haloperidol , and p-chlorophenylalanine but not by propranolol, phenoxybenzamine, alpha-methyltyrosine, or pargyline.

During a subsequent test, mice showed locomotor sensitization despite blockade of ethanol stimulated activity by haloperidol on the first conditioning trial.

Ethanol produced increases in locomotor activity that were reduced by haloperidol.

ALT (80%) and AST (43%) levels were increased in the haloperidol plus ethanol group (protocol 2), as compared with controls.
Triglyceride (TG) levels were increased in the combination of ethanol and haloperidol in protocol 1 (234%) and 2 (106%), as compared with controls.

The facilitatory effect of ethanol on social memory was inhibited by the pretreatment with reserpine and it was antagonized by the administration of haloperidol or sulpiride, but not by SCH 23390.
