supplement:

Ethanol

supplement:

Choline

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

In fact a study by Thomas et al. in 2009 found that nutritional supplementation with choline in rats exposed to ethanol in utero almost completely mitigated the degenerative effects of ethanol on development and behaviour.
It is known that ethanol inhibits folate, choline , and vitamin A/retinoic acid metabolism at multiple steps.
Thus supplementation of folate, choline and vitamin A to mothers may mitigate the effects of the alcohol and reduce the severity or prevalence of FAS.

Dietary supplementation with 2% choline reduced liver methyltransferase activities of both control and ethanol treated mice.

Ethanol stimulated markedly biosynthesis of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline in cloned rabbit lung cells; the stimulating action of ethanol was reduced very much by cortisol and less by ritodrine.

Several groups have reported that supplementation of the diet with choline could partially if not completely abolish the fatty infiltration promoted by ethanol ingestion.3-4 This would suggest that ethanol had increased the dietary requirement for a lipotroph, such as choline.
We have studied choline oxidation in isolated liver mitochondria, and we intend to show that the ingestion and metabolism of ethanol d o increase the oxidation of choline.
ethanol … choline by the liver;5 however, the rapid uptake of choline compared to the slower accumulation of triglyceride would tend to argue against a causal … been shown to depress the hepatic uptake of choline,5 which suggests that uptake is related to the oxidative pathway of choline metabolism.

Closely associated with ethanol concentrations, supratentorial creatine, choline , inositol and aspartate levels decreased after ethanol administration, whereas glucose levels increased.
Similarly, infratentorial choline and inositol concentrations were negatively correlated with ethanol levels over time.

Subjects exposed to ethanol and fed the 40% choline diet exhibited delayed eye openings, significantly fewer successes in hindlimb coordination, and were significantly overactive compared to all other groups.

Collectively, our data show that choline supplementation can normalize disturbances in miRNA expression following developmental alcohol exposure and can protect specific miRNAs from induction by ethanol.
We found that at a false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted criterion of p < 0.05, miR-200c was induced by ethanol exposure and that choline prevented this effect.
