Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

In contrast, suppression of autophagy at a late stage by CQ enhanced the anti-glioma efficiency of quercetin.

Autophagy inhibition induced by quercetin with chloroquine triggered apoptosis but did not alter quercetin modulation in the G1 phase.

CQ N-desethylation was diminished when coincubated with quercetin (20-40% inhibition), ketoconazole, or troleandomycin (20-30% inhibition) and was strongly inhibited (80% inhibition) by a combination of ketoconazole and quercetin, which further corroborates the contribution of CYP2C8 and CYP3As.

Collectively, the lysosomal defects induced by quercetin plus CQ may trigger the stress to both the ER and mitochondria and consequently their functional defects, contributing to glioma cell death.
In this study, we show that combined treatments with the flavonoid quercetin and chloroquine (CQ), which is a lysosomotropic agent with antimalarial activity, synergistically induce caspase-independent cell death in malignant glioma cells.
The combination of quercetin and CQ may be an effective therapeutic option for GBM.
The combination of quercetin and CQ triggered excessive expansion of autolysosomes and lysosomes due to overloading with undigested cellular components and protein aggregates, leading to cell death, whereas quercetin alone increased autophagic flux.

The groups that had received treatment with chloroquine and quercetin had presented significant reduction (p < 0,01 in both) of the parasitaemia comparative to the group control, it suggesting that the drugs had acted as malaricide in the infection for P. juxtanucleare.

In conclusion, our study strongly suggests co administration of antioxidant flavonoid like quercetin along with CQ for antimalarial therapy.
We further tested quercetin, an antioxidant flavanoid, against CQ-induced hepatoxicity and found encouraging results as quercetin was able to drastically reduce the oxidative stress and hepatotoxicity resulting at higher dosages of CQ administration.
