Possible Interaction: Berberine and Paclitaxel

supplement:

Berberine

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

In vitro studies with tubulin isolated from goat brain indicated that berberine binds to tubulin at a single site with a Kd of 11 μM. Berberine inhibited the assembly of tubulin into microtubules and also disrupted the preformed microtubules polymerized in the presence of glutamate and paclitaxel.

Further, we observed that co-treatment with low dose berberine could significantly attenuate the anticancer activity of chemotherapeutic agents, including fluorouracil (5-FU), camptothecin (CPT), and paclitaxel (TAX).

Pretreatment of cells with berberine prior to Paclitaxel blocked the Paclitaxel-induced cell cycle responses and morphological changes.
These results together suggest that berberine modulated the expression and function of pgp-170 that leads to reduced response to Paclitaxel in digestive track cancer cells.

Furthermore, it is also shown that a combination of taxol and BBR significantly slows the growth rate of HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells.

Results Four doses of PTX 2 mg/kg/day induced neuropathy that was reduced by BER at all time-points (i.e. 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min) after injection (P < 0.001 in comparison to control).
