Possible Interaction: Acetylcysteine and Dexamethasone

Research Papers that Mention the Interaction

In the M-1 collecting duct line Na+ transport, mαENaC expression and luciferase expression from αENaC genomic fragments were also increased by 100 nm dexamethasone.

The combinations of dexamethasone or minocycline with NAC and vitamin E increased the AFB1 concentrations in the plasma and all tissues, except for vitreous humor and liver.

The antioxidant NAC can mitigate the oxidative stress damaging effects of DEX.
To assess the implications and investigate the mechanisms of glucocorticoid-elicited osteoporosis, we hypothesize that DEX exposure induces oxidative stress which leads to decreased Cbfa1 mRNA expression, and predict that the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine NAC ) mitigates the damaging effects of DEX.

Infusion of dexamethasone (24 μg/day) for 1 wk increased the abundance of αENaC 2.26 ± 0.04-fold.

In the present study, we analysed whether the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone induces oxidative stress in cultured pancreatic islets and whether the effects of dexamethasone on insulin secretion, gene expression, and viability can be counteracted by concomitant incubation with N-acetylcysteine (NAC).

N-acetyl-L-cysteine completely suppressed ROS produced by DEX.

It is concluded that treatment of the eyes by a combination of 3% acetylcysteine and 0.1% dexamethasone (if used from the first day of ulceration) may retard the corneal wound healing in rabbits.
The results indicated that the combination of acetylcysteine and dexamethasone significantly increased the mean healing time compared to the control group (p < 0.05).
Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate whether adding dexamethasone to NAC could reduce the side effects of the two drugs.

We also show that loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release, as well as caspase-3 activation induced by DEX are attenuated by NAC treatment.

When apoptosis was induced by dexamethasone , the change in cell size was dose and time dependent, and could be blocked by pretreatment of the thymocytes with N-acetylcysteine (NAC).

Whilst the αENaC and Nedd4 genes showed no significant response to either steroid, both the β- and γENaC mRNA levels were increased acutely by both aldosterone and dexamethasone.
